MATANAO, Davao del Sur, Philippines – Two candidates in the barangay (village) elections were killed in separate stabbing incidents in Barangay (village) Asbang, the police said Saturday.
The incidents, which took place on Friday afternoon, appeared to be tied to each other, the police said.
Communist rebels shot and wounded three government soldiers in a clash Saturday in the southern Filipino province of Davao del Sur, a military spokesman said.
The fighting erupted in the village of Sinoron in the town of Santa Cruz where troops had been tracking down New People’s Army rebels behind the spate of attacks in the province.
Two girls, aged 13 and 8, have been reported raped and killed in Sorsogon and Davao cities.
The body of 13-year-old Mildred Lanac was found by residents in the middle of a field in Barangay Peñafrancia, Sorsogon City around 6 a.m. Thursday.
Lanac's mother, Maribel, said half of her daughter's body was buried in the mud when discovered. The girl's underwear was also missing.
"Hindi ko maisip na patay na siya. parang palaging buhay," the victim's mother said.
She said that Mildred went missing after going to her grandmother's house in Barangay Peñafrancia on Wednesday morning.
