We will be taking vans, so it’s relaxing and no need for you to drive. We will enjoy breakfast along the way lovely time for the ladies too arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon we can have a look around the area, a swim or two, arriving back to Davao around 7:00 pm. We anticipated the trip would be p400 p/p for the round trip.

> Interesting News from Frank W

Great to hear from you Ian. I miss Davao dearly. However, lately I have been quite busy with my new employer. I work for Liebherr Mining Equipment in Newport News, VA as their Manager of Marketing & Product Management. Liebher is a $10B/yr family owned company headquartered in Bulle, Switzerland. They are much diversified and part of their product line is Haul Trucks for surface mines around the world. We make the largest truck in the world, the 400 ton capacity T282B haul truck. It is manufactured solely in Newport News, VA.

Presently I am in Lima, Peru where I had to go to an altitude of 4600 meters in the Andes to visit a company Antamina who is interested in buying a fleet of our trucks. Their copper mine is the largest in Peru. I have become suddenly the technical expert to present our product for applications at high altitude! Our future market is definitely at high altitude primarily in South America. Each truck sells for approx. $4.5M USD. Wish me luck! I anxiously wait for the opportunity to sell our product in the Philippines to Xstrata who will be operating the copper mine at Tampakan only a few hours from Davao. Their anticipated start up is estimated to be early 2016.

My wife Mylyn and kids Mealeah (6) and Alexis (4) are doing fine as we are all healthy. I miss Samal Island, Kinilaw, lechon, cold SM including the price, and most of all my good friends in Davao. I trust this email finds everyone in good health and I hope to visit Davao maybe over Christmas to visit friends and relatives. Say Hi to the gang! All the best. Frank

Matalam programme

Last week Ian and John went upto Matalam.

Hi I am John Grant a very good friend of the Pinoy Gardener Bong Domingo living in Davao City and I was honoured last week to be able help assist a seminar at the beautiful Villa Oro resort in Matalam in Mindanao.

I was very lucky to be able to go as part of the livelihood programme to go to Matalam to take part in a seminar that we put on for around 30 Barangays. The purpose was to help t
each this rural community how to grow crops without having to use any capital, and to show them that growing different products in each Baringay would be a great marketing opportunity, and could lead to increased self sufficiency and even allow each Barangay to swap different food items from one to another and sell surplus stocks into local markets and business establishments too.

The main speaker was my friend who has for many years studied container farming and from his own back yard has grown produce originally for his own family. Then as it grew he had surplus stock that he sold to his neighbours. Bong Domingo leads from the front in this subject as he is so passionate.

Even in his confined space he was even able to produce more product to sell to local restaurants and found that apart from sustaining his family he was now even earning money from what started as just an idea.
Bong realised that doing this was from his backyard in Davao City was an extra earner, but people in the smaller barangays could infact improve their quality of standard of life. Not only fresh food but sell surplus and even perhaps make it into a business.

He then set out to find a way that if the Barangays pulled resources it could help the whole community.

He showed in his seminar that the tonnes of rubbish from old tires to old plastic container could be used to assist the growth along with the use of compost, with the correct ingredients.

We were expecting about 50 people and over a 100 turned up putting stress on our resources. The Mayor of Matalam Oscar M. Valdevieso and on the day the mayors senior representative Jose S. Traspe were very positive with the ideas given.

Thanks to Bing....and Ian Fredericks who organized the event for their local community and thanks to the people of the Barangays it may not be too long before some peoples lives change for the better.

We left them with handouts and a vcd presentation and a good meal too, and a promise to return if they want to go to the next stage.

With regard to what products would give them the best yield and would sell best we had with us from Harvest an expert Celes Allo who spent nearly two hours ensuring he got his message through.

At the end of the day it does seem that everyone left excited and willing to set up the Barangays to produce the different items. Its early days though but like the mayor we all hope that if people can work together then food will become much easier to come by and even money may start flowing.

Good luck Matalam.

It was a delight to meet you today at Cafe 51, and thanks for the good work you are doing for us. I look forward to learning and contributing to the Friends.

In speaking with others present, it is a consensus that we want the email address of other members for networking ease. I am not tech savy but was wondering if it is possible or even necessary to have the Friends website in forum that we could post/communicate with each other?

From Chris

Aloha Ian. Thanks for the up-date. I should be back in Davao some time in July. Maybe in time for the trip to Agusan. Tell ever body I send my Aloha. Take care.

From Louis
Gee just when I leave everything gets interesting in the FOM lol. Greetings from Wild Alaska! Everything is fine here, we're about 2 weeks out from the beginning of Salmon Season '09. On Sunday a few boats went out and caught a paltry 15 King Salmon but the bright side is that was more than were caught the first day last year. Wishing my best to you and the FOM, and I look forward to coming back in late August.
